There are meals you remember because the grouper was perfect. Drinks you remember because somebody ordered one with an umbrella the size of a small shrub. And then there are those Gulf Coast moments when you sit down, look out over the water and think, well, this’ll do just fine.

Around Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan, some of the best seats in town come with salt air, sunsets and a view that makes everyone at the table reach for their phone.

So, BEACHBALLERS, we’re rounding up a few of our favorite waterfront patios, balconies and decks on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. (We’re using the word balcony a little loosely here, because when the view is this good, we’re not about to get hung up on architectural technicalities.)

Dinner With a Side of WOW

If we’re talking balconies, The Lodge at Gulf State Park understood the assignment. Both Foodcraft and Perch overlook the Gulf, but there’s something especially good about settling into an outdoor seat with miles of beach stretched out in front of you. Foodcraft keeps things relaxed and family-friendly, while upstairs, Perch turns up the date-night factor with steaks, seafood, cocktails and Gulf Coast sunsets.

Our advice? Time this one around sunset. The Lodge sits along a beautiful stretch of Gulf State Park where the view feels surprisingly untouched for being right in the middle of Gulf Shores. Order another round, stay awhile and watch the sky do its thing. Nobody ever regretted being a few minutes late for bedtime because the sunset was showing off.

Then there’s Jesse’s on the Bay in Fort Morgan, where dinner comes with sweeping views across Mobile Bay. The restaurant combines a more upscale dining experience with a laid-back bayfront setting, and you can even arrive by boat.

This is the spot for sunset dinner when you want dinner to feel like an occasion. And if the sky turns pink over the bay while you’re there? Go ahead and order another round. No one is in a hurry.

Shoes Optional-ish, Views Required

Not every great Gulf Coast view requires white tablecloths and a reservation.

The Gulf in Orange Beach may not technically have the balcony we promised in the title, but we’re invoking BEACHBALL executive privilege and including it anyway. Built around repurposed shipping containers with outdoor seating tucked among sand, palms and the waterfront, The Gulf is one of those places where the setting is half the experience.

Grab a grouper sandwich, find a waterside spot and settle in. It feels less like going out to eat and more like somebody created a really fabulous backyard directly on the Gulf.

Nearby, COASTAL Orange Beach takes the same why put walls between us and THAT? approach. Located directly on the sugar-white sand, it offers open-air beachfront dining, a beach bar, live music and unobstructed Gulf views. Breakfast with the Gulf in front of you? Yes. Cocktails at sunset? Also yes. We appreciate a place with range.

And for a different kind of waterfront view, Cobalt sits beneath the Perdido Pass Bridge overlooking the bay. Its large outdoor deck is made for sunset watching, and boats can pull up right outside. Translation: plenty to look at while you wait on the best Firecracker Shrimp.

The Best Balcony Might Be Yours

Of course, some of the best balconies on the Alabama Gulf Coast don’t require a menu at all.

There’s something pretty wonderful about waking up in a Gulf-front condo in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, pouring coffee and stepping outside before you’ve even bothered with real clothes. No waiting for a table. No shoes required. Just waves rolling in and maybe a dolphin sighting if the Gulf is feeling generous.

Properties around Gulf Place in Gulf Shores put you right in the middle of the action, while condos throughout Orange Beach offer everything from high-floor panoramic views to balconies overlooking Perdido Pass. Head west toward Fort Morgan, and the scenery gets quieter, with stretches of shoreline and Mobile Bay sunsets that feel worlds away from the busier parts of town.

And that’s really the beauty of a Gulf Coast vacation: the view changes depending on where you sit. Gulf sunrise. Bay sunset. Boats passing through the inlet. Pelicans flying by at eye level. All worth pulling up a chair for.

Go Ahead, Sit Awhile

There’s something about a great view that makes vacation slow down. Dinner lasts longer, coffee gets a second cup, and suddenly sitting on the balcony doing absolutely nothing feels like a perfectly good plan.

• Time it right. Sunrise, golden hour and sunset can make a great view even better.
• Look beyond the Gulf. Bay views, boats, bridges and Fort Morgan sunsets deserve some attention, too.
